Back in the 1980s I took a group of computing students to see how the Kays warehouse system worked. In those days customers ordered via a paper form which Kays staff then entered into their computer in their office in the centre of Worcester. The order was then processed by the computer to request each item to be got ready at each of the storage areas in the warehouse. A large trolley on a conveyor (“gondola”) travelled round the warehouse and as it reached each item someone was ready to put it in! At the end of the journey round the warehouse the customers order had been collected in the gondola. And then posted.
