Kays 1960s

WATCH World of Kays 1960s video animation by Matt Norris, student at University of Worcester.

Swinging into the 60s

 You pictured yourselves

in my glossy pages
for hours on end
in the days when
you wanted a going away suit

Time wound up watches
Goya spray painted
perfume
when new found wealth
became cute

Bri-nylon Gorgeous Gussies
made it briefly
with baby dolls
as short as minis
that rode right up to the waist

For the slimmer figure
day wear gym slips
came round again
Another quantum leap
in fashion design haste

Pointed toe high heel shoes
and a pencil-line skirt
Thick suede shoes
and slacks for him
worn with a Sta-press shirt

Stockings and suspender technology
depended on
a sixpenny tanner
A button to cover breakages
A snap that really hurt

Frilly petty-coats and
bouffant hair-dos
White gloved bridesmaid
at the birth of consumerism
in a nuclear age of uncertainty

There was a smock
or belle-tent dress
to give room for growth
for this the baby boom
women worker’s in maternity

Mass produced concept games
for Christmas
Cine camera pictures on the go
Toy Petite typewriters and TV’s
gave us action for leisure

Harry Wheatcroft’s hybrid tea roses
became as famous
as his topiaried moustache
Seeing catalogued flora and fauna
made mail order gardening a pleasure

Turn up kitchen heat
on stainless pressure cookers
in the tower blocks without range
where the two bar fireguard
was considered a little strange

Give yourself a make-over
Match all surfaces to doors
Use stick-on Fablon
Eat at a drop leaf Formica table
with four vinyl chairs to arrange

A newly-painted indoor bathroom
decorated in easy peel washables
A paper that detached wantonly
when lying in the bath
shrinking shrink-to-fit jeans

All electrical home helps and
a white enamelled twin tub
for the aproned dinner lady
Would you be seen dead in this?
Not by any means!
